Default How to Make a multi boot Linux / XP/Vista PC

CW3000HD
How to Make a multi boot Linux / XP/Vista PC

First lets assume that you already have your CW3000HD up & running with a hard drive.
& that it is a CW3000 HD Rev 1

Connect a keyboard & mouse to the CW3000

Next go to the asus website & download all the drivers for the M2NPV-VM mother board asus.com their global website has all the drivers. DO NOT install the bios update or you may not be able to boot the CW3000HD software.
Burn these drivers to a CD & install them after you have installed windows XP/Vista

If you have a Rev 2 you will need to look on the board to find the manufacturer & model of the board & visit the board manufacture website to download the windows drivers

You will need another hard drive I used IDE hard drives cause that’s what I had on hand, it can be done with SATA too.

a 40 gig will do nice for basic PC operation but a 120 or more will be needed if you plan to record movies using “prog DVB” or “My Theatre”

Remember the first drive has the Linux partitions on it so you can’t use it without a good understanding of how the Linux system works so for now lets say the first drive is not accessible yet.

(For a program to mount the Linux partition from within windows go to :
codejacked.com/automatically-mount-your-linux-partition-in-windows/ to download the free program)

Now power down the CW3000 and remove the power cord, top cover & remove the power supply (3 screws on the back) & swing the power supply out of the way so you have access to the second hard drive bay.

Remove the two screws that secure the DVD drive & remove the drive & mounting cage & swing it out of the way.

Take your second hard drive & configure it for slave operation then install it in the outer hard drive bay, the same way as the first drive so the connectors on both drives line up the same way (power connector on top), you will need a double connector IDE cable that is long enough to reach to the left front corner of the mother board (if the CW3000 recording drive is IDE, if it is SATA then you only need a single connector IDE cable)

if the current IDE cable you attached to the first hard drive is not quite long enough to reach then swap with the cable that goes to the DVD drive & flash card, hook it up the same way.
If you are using 2 SATA drives go to the next step

Install the IDE cable to the outer (windows) HDD only & leave the other cable to the (CW3000) drive disconnected for now, connect the other end to the secondary (BLACK) IDE connector on the front left corner of the mother board.
Pay close attention as the #1 pin is on the right end with the secondary (BLACK) IDE & the #1 pin is on the opposite end the left with the Primary (BLUE) connector (top left), connect hard drive power connector to the windows hard drive.

(your windows drive should be secondary slave if IDE)
(if SATA use any port on the mother board other than the port you used for the CW3000 SATA HDD) if a SATA was used for that drive also.

Tuck the ribbon cable nicely along the bottom to ensure it does not get caught on the card reader attached to the bottom of the DVD burner.

Remove DVD Drive & the CF card from the card adapter mounted to the bottom of the DVD then slide the DVD unit back into place making sure the IDE & power cables are still connected, re install the power supply & boot the unit.

Be sure to press the “F8” key on the keyboard during boot to prompt the boot menu,

Next open the DVD door & place your XP install disc in the drive, close the door & navigate down to the windows hard drive in the boot menu & press enter

Format & install your operating system & drivers & software as you would on any other PC.
Once all is installed & running well as a PC , Power down the unit, re install the flash card & hook up the power cable & IDE or SATA cable to the first (CW3000) hard drive & re – boot (if CW3000 Record HDD is SATA it must be re connected to its original SATA port on the mother board)

press”delete” on boot , go into the bios & find the boot device priority page you will need to change 1st boot back to “Removable, 2nd to “CDROM”, 3rd to “HARD DISK”

(you can adjust these as fit to set what ever OS you want to boot first
to boot the other OS simply press “F8” at boot & select the drive from the list & press enter)

Once those options are set press “esc” to get back to the main boot menu, go down to “hard disk drives” bump the card reader (SMI MODEL) from the bottom to the top of the list otherwise XP will always boot even if you have chosen the card reader as first boot device it will not boot the satellite receiver till you bump the card reader from the bottom to the top & set the order of the list as follows:
1st master (SMI MODEL)
2nd slave or SATA “your second installed XP/Vista hard drive
2nd master or SATA “your first installed CW3000HD hard drive”

F10 save & exit.

Now when you boot the CW3000HD should boot as normal
To boot with XP you must shut down completely not just restart otherwise you will not get the pre boot screen, it is ok to chose “restart” when shutting down windows & want to start as Linux but not the other way around, when you power up press “F8” during the first boot screen this will prompt the boot menu to appear, simply choose to boot from the hard drive you installed your XP on to boot as a PC. It will probably be at the bottom of the list.

So far the only problem I have found is they both fight for the correct time so what ever system you use for satellite epg let that one have the correct time, perhaps someone who knows about Linux may know how to solve this, as for me I know nothing about Linux so I did not want to start tampering with things & screw it up till I have some time to learn.

To use with Prog DVB or My theatre you must download windows drivers for the card,
The closest equivalent card is the “DigiStar” card, the drivers & Prog DVB can be downloaded here: geniatech.com/d_dvbs.htm

note the software revision on the cards are different but I was able to get it going with this version of Prog DVB & with the latest version of my theatre & it worked fine, I tried other versions & other popular programs but I had scanning, switching, or signal quality issues. When you install this version of ProgDVB remember to repace newer files on your system with these ones when prompted otherwise you will have issues.

Adding more ram & faster CPU will only speed up windows & not help with any issues you have under Linux as the system is already overkill for the operation of the CW3000HD as it was intended.

Remember when adding faster CPU that Athlon 64 dual core processors are not all supported only the 65W max are supported with the current power supply.

The AMD A64 5000+ X2 black edition with unlocked multiplier is your best choice of processor as it overclocks nicely @ 3Ghz

Note: To make a triple boot system use a 300Gb or higher HDD, delete all partitions (with xp install disc) & format only aprox 1/2 of drive & install xp on it, leave the rest as un partitioned space, install vista on un partitioned space, vista will install grub partition manager that will allow you to choose to boot xp or vista when you are booting from the windows HDD.

Enjoy your new multi-media experience
