Default What is Contrast Ratio?

For any avid TV watcher, one of the things that make a picture more attractive is its contrast ratio. The contrast ration is a simple concept, but it can greatly benefit the display of a picture on a TV set. The contrast ration is generally defined as the difference between the brightest color (which is white) and the darkest color (which is black).

Today's TV sets can come in a wide variety of contrast ratios. Not only do most TV's perform this feature differently, but there are a number of ways to measure contrast ration which can affect results. However, for most TV viewers, their eyes are definitely good judges of contrast ratio.

The Difference Between Black & White

For those that want the best picture possible, the more contrast there is between the brightest whites and the darkest color black, the more stunning the picture will be. Generally speaking, CRT monitors (traditional TV sets) performed best in offering the highest contrast ratios, however with the advance in LCD and plasma technology, these two popular forms of monitors are gaining ground. Believe it or not, many LCD TV sets are unable to create true black, the color they do create is a very, very dark grey. This can have an affect on the picture and it is why some experts still state the best available picture still comes from CRT monitors.

How to Shop for A TV with a High Contrast Ratio

If you are shopping for a TV, one of the concerns should be to find one with a high contrast ratio. Of course, you can take a look at the specs, but again measuring the contrast can be done in several ways and may not be a good guideline. Instead, at the TV shop, look at a variety of TV's in the class you are shopping for, adjust the contrast and see which one has the best overall picture. While contrast ratio is important, other features to many shoppers are more or just as important so don't base your purchase only on the contrast ratio.
