 Somali pirates 'go two-for-two' Somali pirates 'go two-for-two' Sat, 02 May 2009 15:02:05 GMT Pirates have increased attacks tenfold despite the naval presence. Somali sources say pirates have hijacked a UN-chartered bulkier carrier off coast of East Africa in the day's second successful piracy attempt. The vessel was reportedly carrying a UN cargo of vehicles when it was seized by pirates in the Indian Ocean waters on Saturday, a Press TV correspondent reported citing Somali sources speaking on condition of anonymity. The ship is now believed to be heading to Somali waters, the sources added. The exact number and nationality of the onboard crew were not immediately known. Earlier in the day, pirates had captured another vessel, the UK-operated Greek cargo ship the "Ariana," just hours after a NATO-led Portuguese frigate foiled a separate attempt by their comrades in the Gulf of Aden. The ship's UK operator Seven Seas Maritime Ltd said pirates are now holding the 24 Ukrainian crew onboard the bulk carrier that was transporting 35,000 tons of Soya to the Far East from Brazil. The Portuguese frigate, part of NATO's anti-piracy mission off Gulf of Aden, briefly detained the 19 pirates and confiscated weapons including explosives and grenades. The bandits were set free because they had not attacked Portuguese citizens or properties. Pirates continue to defy the naval presence patrolling the region, launching ten times more attacks on vessels in the first three months of 2009 compared to the same figure last year. Somali outlaws are now holding at least 17 ships and around 300 crewmen on ransom.
