Sun Microsystems plans massive layoffs

Sun Microsystems Inc.’s restructuring and layoffs announcement Friday may mean more bad news for the computer technology company’s Broomfield operations.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company (NASDAQ: JAVA) said Friday it will eliminate between 15 percent and 18 percent of its jobs to reduce expenses over the next year. The move could put as many as 6,000 Sun employees out of work worldwide, the company said.

Sun has not broken down how the layoffs will affect any specific location.

If the restructuring hits its Broomfield campus proportionate to companywide figures, between 375 and 450 positions will be cut locally.

Sun employs about 2,500 people based at the campus, down from a high of 4,700 in 2005 after it acquired Louisville-based Storage Technology Corp. Its local offices have been among the hardest hit by the company’s steady downsizing in recent years.

The restructuring also reorganizes the company’s software business into three business units: one focusing on software applications platforms, one on systems platforms and another for cloud computing and software development platforms.

The restructuring is meant to reduce Sun’s operating costs by $700 million to $800 million annually, the company said.
